  9.     Welcome to release 1.05 of SLS ( SoftLanding Linux System ) containing
  10.     kernel 1.0, libc 4.5.23, gcc 2.5.8 and X-Free86 2.0 (2.1 on CD). Linux 
  11.     is a free 386 unix like operating system similar to System V, and dev- 
  12.     eloped by Linus Torvald, plus a few hundred big hearted programmers on 
  13.     the Internet. SLS is produced and GPL copyrighted by Softlanding Soft- 
  14.     ware.

  16.     You may redistribute SLS as long as you do include both this file, and 
  17.     the file  COPYING  prominently in the distribution. Do not take credit 
  18.     for the work of others.

  20.     SLS is NOT just an image dump of someones Unix system. Instead it is a 
  21.     distribution whose primary purposes are:

  23.     0) provide an initial installation program (for the queasy).
  24.     1) utilities compiled to use minimal disk space.
  25.     2) provide a reasonably complete/integrated U*ix system.
  26.     3) provide a means to install and uninstall packages.
  27.     4) permit partial installations for small disk configs.
  28.     5) add a menu driven, extensible system administration.
  29.     6) take the hassle out of collecting and setting up a system.
  30.     7) give non internet users access to Linux.
  31.     8) provide a distribution that can be easily updated.

  33.     SLS, contains many utilities designed to provide a relatively complete 
  34.     computer operating system for the sophisticated user. It also includes
  35.     programs for compression, text processing, communications, X-windowing 
  36.     system, program development: ( Assembler, C, C++, Fortran, Pascal, Tcl 
  37.     and Perl), mail, spreadsheets, and word-processing. Also supported are 
  38.     DOS files, a DOS emulator, SCSI, CDROMs, and TCP/IP. A 387 coprocessor 
  39.     is emulated by the kernel if you don't have one.  Full source code for 
  40.     the kernel is also provided with SLS.

  42.     The development environment includes libraries for unix and Xwindows a
  43.     debugger that does full screen (via emacs) with support for core dumps
  44.     Shared libraries make the most miserly use of RAM and disk space.  FAQ 
  45.     and Manual pages document most of the Linux utilities. SLS requires at 
  46.     least 12 Meg of harddisk for a minimal install. 90 Meg or more is req- 
  47.     uired for the full system (not including TeX or Interviews).  You will 
  48.     need at least 2 Meg of RAM, 4 meg if you want to compile programs, and 
  49.     8 Meg to run X-windows.  Note that sometimes you can get by with less, 
  50.     but usually with noticeable performance limitations.
